Finding the right key

Studying the cinematography of THE PIANIST for my next film. A lot of soft diffused light, shadows hardly fall into complete darkness, many scenes with smoke to diffuse light, there's often a nice rim light around the edges of the subject. Camera is mostly locked down, even during intense action. When the camera does move it is simple pans and tilts with a few tracking shots only to follow characters with the occasional push in. Some POV shots. Characters are often dressed in darker tones while the background is lighter. Over-all the film's 1st half is warm in tone while the second half has a colder, muted tone.
