I really liked Hillcoat's previous film THE PROPOSITION but LAWLESS felt a little scatter-shot with some key scenes just coming off as awkward and not dramatic. I didn't mind the infusion of music in a style reminiscent of the Coen Bros' O BROTHER, but unlike the Coens' snappy & expressive writing I had to turn on the subtitles to understand what was being said in LAWLESS, especially Tom Hardy. I love me some Hardy but he just grumbled and walked funny through this whole movie.
